New Hamburg man sentenced for blowing up Waterloo home

A 38-year-old New Hamburg man who blew up his parents’ home while trying to make cannabis oil has been sentenced.

The Record Online reports that Lance Rees will spend four months behind bars after trying to make the oil in a basement.

The man tried to use butane to extract the oil from marijuana, but when gas filled the basement and the furnace heated up, it caused a massive explosion.

The Christopher Drive home in Waterloo had close to half a million dollars in damage from the April 2016 incident.

Along with the jail sentence, Rees has been ordered to do 40 hours of community service, and will be on probation for a year.
