Nine year sentence for Guelph man who killed neighbour

A Guelph man has been sentenced to nine years in prison following the shooting death of his neighbour just over two years ago.

Sean Haverty was convicted of manslaughter in the June 2015 killing of Chris Schweitzer.

The shooting took place during a confrontation at a home on Tiffany Street in Guelph.

Haverty will be credited with time served, meaning he’ll spend six more years behind bars.

He was originally charged with first degree murder, but the jury decided Haverty did not mean to kill Schweitzer.

Defence lawyer Ari Goldkind tells 570 NEWS, family members of the victim were not pleased, but the jury spoke loud and clear that this was not murder, but that’s often the way our system of law works, “which is not an eye for an eye system”.

He does not expect the crown to file an appeal of the sentence, although it does have 30 days to make a final decision.

Goldkind also does not expect Haverty to push for an appeal.

Initially, the crown had pressed for a 12-year sentence while the defence asked for five.
