Fireworks, music at University of Waterloo for Canada Day

The University of Waterloo is the place to be to celebrate Canada’s 150th with a big bang.

Canadian rock icon Tom Cochrane with Red Rider is set to take the stage at 7 p.m. , and the fireworks are set to go at 10 p.m. at Columbia Lake.

There are two other big anniversaries taking place at the University, as UW is turning 60 this year and its Federation of Students is 50.

Fireworks Supervisor Al Ridley tells 570 News that the planning for this big fireworks show actually started months ago.

Ridley says he wants it to be more than just the loud noises, but also about the experience.

“It is also about emotion. We look at creating some emotion and moods that flow through the whole display.”

And what goes into prepping for the big show tonight?

Ridley says sunscreen, as the fireworks team is actually already at work starting at the noon hour.

“It’s actually a pretty safe and stable thing to set up the pyrotechnics. They are wired together and get electronically fired. The main rule is – no smoking.”
The fireworks are set to go off at 10 p.m., and the weather is not much of a factor.

Ridley says they have pulled off the fireworks display in many different conditions..

He has fired them in dense fog, and light rain.
