Uptown Waterloo BIA wants us to shop local

Local Waterloo businesses are hoping to paint the town blue.

The new lawn sign campaign launched by the Uptown Waterloo Business Improvement Area (BIA) hopes to fight back against the year long construction that has torn apart much of the uptown core.

Patti Brooks, Executive Director of the BIA says with all the chaos, business has taken a hit.

“Certainly there has been a decrease in foot traffic on King Street in particular, more so now with the street-scape project which is just north of Erb Street.”

Mandy Brouse is the Marketing Director of Words Worth Books on King Street, she says their business has yet to recover from months of heavy construction.

“We kind of went through the brunt of it last year on King Street, we are right in the center between William and Willis which was kind of a big space hit so it wasn’t our best year last year for sure.”

Those problems should improve with paving in Uptown Waterloo wrapping up Friday morning.

The campaign called “Choose Local” encourages residents to shop local and keep local dollars in local business.

Brooks says the campaign has picked up quite a bit of steam since its launch, with many businesses already on board.

“This lawn sign campaign has just gone crazy. We have had so many businesses respond to taking 10 signs each and giving them out to their businesses. Its interesting, we are starting to see them all over the lawns in uptown already.”

A full list of businesses where signs are available for pick-up is available on the Uptown Waterloo BIA website.
