Waterloo-Wellington ‘Relay for Life’ goes the distance for cancer research

Hundreds of supporters will be up all night Friday to help raise money, and fight back against cancer.

Event Chair Chrissy Zalagenas says the 2017 Waterloo-Wellington Relay for Life is all about giving back to our community, and raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society.

“There’s a number of different areas where the money raised goes to — one of them is cancer research, and because we have the Grand River Cancer Centre, some of this money will be used right here in the community. We also have transportation programs, which are so essential, and our cancer support hotline and information services. There are a number of different ways where money raised at these events get dispersed into Waterloo Region.”

Zalagenas adds that for the first time in a long time, there will be live music taking place all night at their event.

“We have a very strategic goal this year of raising just shy of $170,000 in Waterloo and Wellington. This will be the first year that we’re consolidating the Wellington area, and the previous Cambridge and KW events — so it’s all new. Our venue this year will be the Waterloo Region Police Association, and we think we’re going to be able to meet our fundraising target.”

Zalagenas says around 45 – 50 teams, 300 individuals, and 60 volunteers are participating in the 2017 Relay for Life.

“It’s really a community-based event where we can get together and celebrate those that have beat the battle, remember those that we’ve lost, and continue to make a commitment to fighting back against cancer.”
