WRPS Chief wants to influence the 2018 Ontario election

The top cop in Waterloo Region is looking forward to being able to influence the 2018 Ontario election.

Chief Bryan Larkin is expected to be chosen as the new president of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, and tells 570 NEWS, “We’re very excited about the debate agenda.”

The Association is meeting in Kitchener this week, and while other names could be nominated before the vote on Wednesday, that’s not expected to happen.

Larkin wants to use his upcoming new role in the OACP to bring certain issues to the forefront of next year’s campaigning.

Most importantly: police funding; and tackling what Larkin describes as the ‘tsunami wave’ of the opioid crisis.

As for the legalization of marijuanna, Larkin says while that will be a federal law, the regulatory framework will be a provincial responsibility.

He wants to know, for example, if the province or individual police services will have to pay for roadside screening devices for drug-impaired drivers.

Larkin says public safety has, in a sense, fallen off the public and political agendas.

Larkin is currently the vice-president of the OACP.

Serving as president is a one-year term.
