Manulife LPGA Classic a ‘hole in one’ for Cambridge economy

Cambridge business are seeing a little extra green in their wallet as the Manulife LPGA Classic takes place at Whistle Bear this weekend.

Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Greg Durocher says the event fills restaurants, hotels, and business right across Cambridge.

“Our hotels are filled with professional be it the players or those putting on the event. The economic impact from an international event like this in our community is huge for the hotel and restaurant industries.”

Durocher adds every year the event draws big business and big dollars to the economy.

“It’s not unusual for events like this, especially in Canada where we don’t get a lot of major professional golf events, to see upwards of $10 million injected into the community over the week-long event.”

There is some uncertainly in the years ahead as Manulife stepped down in February as the title sponsor.

“Obviously we are a little bit concerned and disappointed that this many in fact be the last LPGA event in Cambridge and the region but the managing group has been working diligently to replace that sponsor. It is a huge commitment.”

There is still no word on if or when a new sponsor has been selected to keep in tournament in the region next year.
