Police say a man is in custody after he hopped into the driver’s seat of an ambulance and took it for a joyride overnight.
The regionally-operated ambulance was parked outside Cambridge Memorial Hospital, when it was stolen from the lot shortly after midnight.
Initial reports stated that a paramedic was in the back of the ambulance at the time of the theft, but they turned out to be false.
Police cruisers tracked the ambulance with lights on, but no sirens, eastbound on Highway 401 into Halton Region, where OPP took over the chase.
The ambulance was pursued through Peel Region, East Gwillimbury and into Wasaga Beach, where the high-speed pursuit was terminated for the fifth time.
OPP eventually deployed a spike belt, ending the more than six-hour chase.
A 29-year-old Cambridge man was arrested and faces several charges including flight from police and possession of stolen property.
Police say the ambulance was not damaged.
