Waterloo is celebrating Earth Day with the planting of 150 trees

The City of Waterloo is inviting residents to help them beautify the City by planting 150 trees on Earth Day.

This is part of celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday.

“We’re going to be digging and planting 150 native trees and shrubs with the community at Westmount Sports Park. We also have our City of Waterloo Living Legacy 150th Tree Planting program,” explains Peggy Stevens, Environmental Stewardship Coordinator with the City.

Stevens says gloves, hand tools and refreshments will be provided by the city, but if you are planning on getting dirty, make sure you wear closed-toe shoes.

On top of the planting in the park, they are also giving residents the chance to beautify their own yards.

“It’s a tree give-away. So we have about 300 native trees and shrubs that we will be giving away to Waterloo residents. We have a number of species, so we have Sugar Maple, Red Maple, Blue-Beech, Dog Wood and Serviceberry. And they’re all small trees so they’re up to three feet tall in a container pot.”

The tree give-away is one per resident, on a first-come, first-serve basis. All you need to do is bring proof of I.D.

The planting runs from 9 am to 12 pm at Westmount Sports Park.
