Waterloo firefighters go door-to-door for annual home smoke alarm campaign

Don’t be surprised if you hear a knock at your door, and it’s a Waterloo firefighter.

Public Education Officer John Perc says Waterloo Fire Rescue has officially kicked off the annual home smoke alarm campaign.

“Our firefighters will be attending over 4,500 homes in the City of Waterloo, and will ask homeowners about fire safety. Specifically, they’ll ask them if they know how many smoke alarms they need, how often they need to change the batteries, do they have enough carbon monoxide alarms, and do they have an escape plan — and if the homeowner doesn’t know the answer to any of those, we’ll provide them with some information to help raise awareness.”

Percy says this is a great opportunity for their firefighters to get out and meet local residents, and educate them on fire safety.

“We’ll be doing this during the evening hours — usually after dinner — and it’s a great opportunity for us to meet people, and a great reminder for homeowners and occupants to take fire safety into their own hands.”

Percy adds that it’s required under provincial legislation that all homes have working smoke alarms on every level, and outside all sleeping areas.

“Working smoke and CO alarms are required in every home. Out of all the house fires in Ontario, 50 per cent of the homes do not have working alarms on every level.”

The 2017 home smoke alarm program runs until September 30th in the City of Waterloo.
