University of Waterloo gets federal funding for 3D printing lab

The University of Waterloo is about to become one of the leading institutions in the world when it comes to 3D printing technology.

It was announced on Wednesday that the Federal Government will invest $8.9-million towards a multi-use additive manufacturing lab at UW.

The lab will focus on the development of next-generation additive manufacturing to process metals through the use of new sensors, quality assurance software, and machine intelligence. Once fully equipped, it will be one of the 10 largest university-based additive manufacturing facilities in the entire world.

Minister of Small Business and Tourism Bardish Chagger made the announcement on behalf of the government, and says this funding was made possible through a partnership between the Feds, industry partners, and the private sector.

“We know the manufacturing sector is essential as they’re job creators, but we also know that there is new technologies on the rise. The manufacturing sector has to embrace these technologies, and this is a new way to make us more competitive. We know the University of Waterloo is filled with leaders, which is why they’ve been chosen for this funding.”

Chagger adds that this 3D printing lab will be a perfect addition to our region’s already booming tech and innovation sector.

“For our region to be recognized as leaders in many different areas is very exciting. The University of Waterloo is groundbreaking when it comes to innovation as they work closely with the community– which is also the vision of our government. These kind of investments really allow start-up companies to be able to scale-up, as it gives them access to research and helps them create jobs.”

In total, the federal government is investing $8.9-million towards the lab, while the province has already provided $6.2-million.

The investment is also slated to support up to 18 news partnerships and create over 80 tech and manufacturing jobs.
