Regional Police officer charged with domestic battery in Las Vegas

A local police officer has been charged with domestic battery after an off-duty incident in Nevada.

Inspector Michael Haffner with Regional Police says the 9-year officer was charged in Las Vegas on May 19th.

“We were notified by the Las Vegas Police Department that one of our members was involved in an incident, and that charges have been laid. Additionally, our service will be conducting an internal review of the circumstances.”

Haffner adds that due to the circumstances, no other details regarding the officer or the incident can be released.

“The member who has been with our service for 9 years is assigned to our North Division policing branch. They have been charged with domestic battery in relation to an incident that occurred on Friday — but because it is a domestic related incident, the name will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.”

Haffner says the officer has been suspended with pay, as Regional Police continue to conduct an internal investigation.

“To maintain consistency, transparency, and accountability to our community — the decision was to suspend the member with pay as per the requirements of the Police Services Act. These are always situations where were reflective of the community though– we investigate a number of family violence incidents throughout the year — as an organization, we need to be transparent and accountable to our community and our organization.”

Haffner adds that Regional Police take these types of situations very seriously, and the officer in question will answer to the charge in Las Vegas court in late June.

“It’s an investigation that is being conducted in the United States, as such, our member shall be returning there on June 19th, 2017 to face those charges,” said Haffner.
