Regional Police shut down Kitchener pot dispensary

A pot dispensary in Kitchener has been shut down after a raid by Regional Police.

Police executed a search warrant at the KW Dispensary on Victoria Street around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, and ultimately charged two of the owners.

Inspector Mike Haffner says they began investigating the dispensary back in February.

“As we’re all aware, illegal dispensaries are popping up in our region. It is illegal to sell marijuana at these establishments unless they are licensed by Health Canada, and follow certain rules and regulations. We searched the KW Dispensary as they were not licensed through Health Canada, and were selling marijuana through the storefront– which is not in accordance with the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulation.”

Haffner says they’re still searching for two other males connected to the dispensary.

“We have charged two individuals associated with the KW Dispensary. Investigators are still working to locate two other individuals, and lay appropriate charges.”

Haffner adds that Regional Police are unsure of how this dispensary began operating in the first place.

“It seems to be a better question to ask the City of Kitchener, or anywhere else where these illegal dispensaries are popping up. From a Health Canada perspective, and through the MMPR, they’re not licensed and are therefore illegal.”

Police are reminding us that the sale of marijuana is still illegal, and are urging anyone in the region that requires medical marijuana to purchase it legally through the Health Canada website, or a licensed and legal retailer.
