A stretch of Bridgeport in Waterloo temporarily changing to two-way traffic to help alleviate congestion

A one-way section of Bridgeport Road in uptown Waterloo will be changing to two-way traffic by the end of the week to help alleviate congestion due to construction in the area.

The change is temporary but it will make a big difference for commuters.

Currently, King is closed for construction between Bridgeport and Erb and the Region is prepping a portion of Bridgeport to allow for traffic to move in both directions between King and Regina.

Eric Saunderson with the Region of Waterloo says this will help with congestion.

“This will alleviate some of the traffic along Regina and provide an alternate travel option and detour route in and around the area.”

Implementing two-way traffic along Bridgeport will let drivers traveling through uptown by using King, Regina, and Bridgeport instead of detouring solely along Regina.

Signs, traffic lights, along with pavement markings are being set up between Regina and King with the hopes of having two-way traffic moving along Bridgeport by the weekend.

The conversion will remain in place until November when work along King is expected to be finished.

Last year, the region did a similar conversion of Erb near Caroline to allow for LRT work to be completed.
