Brantford sees rise in fentanyl overdoses

Brantford Police are hoping naloxone kits will stem the rise in fentanyl-related deaths.

It comes as a city sees a surge in opiate-related overdoses, with two in the past three days alone requiring anti-opiates.

“There are drugs out there that are laced with fentanyl, and fentanyl can kill,” says Const. Natalie Laing of Brantford Police Service. “We want to prevent death, and that’s why we are — along with Brant County Health Unit — making this aware to people that they can get these free kits.”

“Fentanyl may be hiding in the drugs you’re using — and you won’t see it, you won’t taste it. But an amount equal to just two grains of salt can kill you,” says Laing.

She points to an incident just days ago in which a friend’s naloxone kit saved a man’s life.

“His vital signs were absent,” says Laing. “When we got there, a friend of the victim had a kit, and actually administered it to her friend, and that saved his life.”
