The Kitchener Rangers have announced a new general manager.
Murray Hiebert is passing the torch to assistant general manager Mike McKenzie and moving into a role as director of hockey operations for the coming season.
For McKenzie, the promotion marks a milestone half a decade in the making.
“I’ve been here for five years. Kitchener’s my home, the Rangers are my home, and I’m really excited to have the responsibility of this job moving forward,” he says.
“I’ve known [Hiebert] ever since I started here, when we were both kind of low men on the totem pole — he was the head scout and I was just the third assistant coach,” McKenzie reflects. “I’ve kind of moved up with him, and I’m fortunate that he’s allowed me to do a lot of work that maybe some other guys wouldn’t let their assistant GM do.”
“Right from day one, you noticed [McKenzie’s] work ethic,” says Hiebert.
“He’s a tireless worker … and he’s a trooper in that respect. I respect his hockey mind. He’s that young generation — that whole new generation of general managers in our league.”
