Waterloo Region awaits 2021 Canada Summer Games decision

After months of preparation and trying to woo Canada Games officials back in February, it all comes down to today.

Waterloo Region along with Niagara, Ottawa, and Sudbury will find out who will host the 2021 Canada Summer Games.

The selection committee will announce the winning bid at a press conference in Toronto Thursday afternoon.

Tim Jackson with Waterloo Region’s bid committee tells 570 NEWS they’re confident, but it’s certainly no cake walk. “We know it’s a tough competition and it’s almost like a game itself. You’re competing with the best in the province. We have our fingers crossed and we’re hoping to bring a victory back to the region.”

Jackson says the bid committee played to the Region’s strength when making their pitch, “We think we showed the selection committee that coming to Waterloo Region would impact not just this region but the games itself, no other community can offer the technological advancements to the games that our community can.” said Jackson.

The games could also have a big economic impact in the Region. The bid committee expects the games would bring in over $100 Million in economic activity. The expected cost of the games is $40 Million, but half the cost are covered by the federal government, including $6 million for venue upgrades.

While the announcement is in Toronto, locally, our region is holding a party at Moose Winooski’s. Olympic athletes and other supports of Waterloo Region’s 2021 Canada Summer Games bid will be there to watch a live stream of the unveiling.
