Food banks launch annual Spring Food and Fund Drive

Kitchener Fire, Waterloo Fire Rescue, Cambridge Fire, Township of Wellesley Fire and Waterloo Region Police Services are kicking off the Spring and Food and Fund Drive Thursday afternoon.

They are looking to raise food and funds for 20,000 meals in two hours – from 5- 7pm at grocery stores in Kitchener, Waterloo, Wellesley, St. Clements and Cambridge.

All donations will go towards The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, Wilmot Family Resource Centre, Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank and Woolwich Community Services.

Wendi Campbell, Executive Director of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region says, “Our emergency services recognize that accessing food support leads people to connect with other resources needed to move forward, (…) throughout the food assistance network there are programs providing a wide range of services. In addition, the men, women and children who need our help know that they are not alone. This community cares.”

She adds one in 20 households in Waterloo Region need food support.

Over the month of April, our local food banks hope to raise the cash and food needed for 415,000 meals.

The most needed food items include canned meat and fish, canned fruit, stews and chili, and tomatoes & sauce.
