Lost Maud Lewis painting discovered at New Hamburg thrift store

A major discovery at a New Hamburg thrift store.

An original Maud Lewis painting was found at the New Hamburg Thrift Centre by volunteers with the Mennonite Central Committee who were sorting through general donations.

Maud Lewis is considered one of our country’s best folk artists with some of her paintings fetching up to $22,000 at auction.

It’s still unknown how the piece ended up at the thrift centre but General Manager, Karla Richards, says they have received a number of high ticket donations over the years.

“Our donors have been incredible and have come forward with items that were in their family and they wanted the value of the item to make a difference. Certainly this has been the most valuable thing we have ever received.”

Bidding for the painting, which shows two Nova Scotia lobster fishermen out on a boat, will open April 20th at an event celebrating Maud Lewis and will continue online until May 19. The original painting will be available to view from April 21 to May 19 at the Homer Watson House and Gallery on Old Mill Rd in Kitchener.
