Fifth case of cow rabies confirmed in Perth County

The fifth case of cow rabies is now confirmed in Perth County, just west of Kitchener.

Officials with the county’s heath unit say the case comes from a farm south of Listowel, just months after another animal at the same farm had the disease.

Another two rabid cows were found in the county in January, while a calf in the area tested positive for the disease in late 2015.

Hundreds of animals in southern Ontario have been diagnosed with rabies since December 2015, when the outbreak was discovered.

While most of the cases have centred around the Hamilton area, the virus has been found as far west as Huron County.
