OPP lay over 800 charges during distracted driving blitz

Ontario Provincial Police say many motorists are still not getting the message.

They’ve been zeroing in on distracted driving this week and have already laid close to 850 charges.

OPP Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says he’s been hearing from officers on patrol that distracted drivers “are everywhere” – chatting on their cell phones when they should be paying attention while behind the wheel.

Schmidt says while multi-tasking may work in the office and the home, it does not work when behind the wheel.

He says that split second when you are looking down at your phone is often when traffic stops in front of you.

The OPP says distracted driving is the number one killer on provincial highways, and it has been for four years.

The March break distracted driving campaign continues until Sunday.
