Power being restored after winds cut power to thousands in southern Ontario

By The Canadian Press

Hydro One says it is making “tremendous progress” in restoring power after high winds left more than 68,000 customers without power across southern Ontario, particularly in the southwest.

Environment Canada says wind gusts in the 100 km/h range that began late Wednesday morning were expected to continue into the evening.

Hydro One says at of about 10 p.m., repair crews had restored power to more than 48,000 customers and expected about 18,000 customers to remain without electricity overnight.

The utility says there were 270 active outages by late afternoon as the wind knocked trees onto wires and blew down poles in some areas.

Most of the remaining outages, about 4,000, are in Simcoe while Haldimand still has about 3,900 outages.

Hydro One says it has mobilized crews from elsewhere in Ontario to help the restoration effort.
