Half of Canadians fail to repair pothole damage: survey

By Jonathan Muma

Pothole season is approaching, and a new survey shows Canadians don’t do a great job repairing the damage.

Only half of the 72 per cent of motorists who have hit a damage causing pothole this winter have fixed the problem.

And it could be putting drivers at risk.

You may not realize your car has been damaged, but Kal Tire Spokesperson Bill Gardiner says there is one thing which is almost always a dead giveaway something is wrong.

“Any change to steering wheel position,” he said. “So, if you hit an obstacle of any kind, pothole or otherwise, and the steering is now off-centre, you know, you’ve bent something.”

The best defence against a pothole is having the proper tire pressure.

“If your tires are underinflated, you’re gonna have damage to the rims and tires because the tire pushes in towards the rim too easily, and the tire gets trapped between the pothole and the edge of the rim,” Gardiner said.

He added, it’s a good idea to get a full inspection when you swap your winter tires in the fall or spring to make sure there isn’t a problem that could be made worse by a pothole.
