Cambridge inside workers strike officially over; deal ratified

It was a unanimous decision for Cambridge City Council as they put the final stamp of approval on a deal with the city’s inside workers. CUPE Local 1882, representing those workers, also passed the tentative deal that was presented late Wednesday night.

Nancy Movrin with CUPE Local 1882 says they are pleased with the outcome with 97% of their members voting in favour of the deal.

“1882 members ratified this agreement at their ratification meeting today. Our members take pride in delivering the public services that our community relies on. City of Cambridge Inside workers appreciate the support we have seen from the public in the last few days.”

The new agreement addressed some of the issues raised during negotiations. It includes:

-Red circling (freezing) of grandparented wages starting the first day of ratification
-Individuals with grandparented wages will also receive a 1% lump sum payment the first pay in December from 2017-2019 based on the maximum salary level identified by their position’s grade.
-Cost of Living Allocation each year during the contract (2016-2019)
-1.7% retroactive for 2016
-2% each year for 2017-2019
-General increase to benefits within the mandate (for example, pregnancy/parental leave top up)
-Vacation entitlement improvement for new hires

Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig says, “We are thankful that residents have been so cooperative and patient during this time. They, along with our staff, make this city great. We are looking forward to providing full services again and moving forward together.”

163 workers, including administrators, technical staff, by-law enforcement and building inspectors walked off the job last Friday.
