Cambridge Councillor faces complaint after sexual comments

More issues in the City of Cambridge.

The Integrity Commissioners office found City Councillor Mike Devine violated the city’s code of conduct and will face reprimand from council.

In the complaint filed against the Councillor it says on two occasions Devine referred to a woman as a “sexy gramma” and other sexually charged remarks.

The document says on both occasions, the complainant said she could smell alcohol on Devine’s breath.

Cambridge mayor Doug Craig tells 570 NEWS that council has met over this matter.

“Council clearly has accepted the report by the integrity commissioner and the findings in that report,” says Craig, “Tuesday, we will deal with it publicly and I’m preparing a reprimand that will be read publicly concerning Councillor Devine’s actions.”

Mayor Craig says the reprimand will include an apology from Devine to the complainant.

“The reprimand will include things like an apology to the complainant,” says Craig, “it will include things like sensitivity training that we feel that he should be going through so this does not repeat itself in the future.”

Devine tells 570 NEWS that he does not deny making those statements but says there was no intent to make a derogatory comment or to offend the complainant.

“I’m not denying the comments that I made and the comments that were made were very, very disrespectful on my behalf,” says Devine, “I can’t take them back, I want to extend my sincerest apologies to the complainant, to my wife, family and to the community and to all the people who have supported me.”

“I recognize that this is even more inappropriate as a city Councillor and for that I am very sorry,” says Devine, “I assure you nothing like this will ever happen again and in reality, nobody should have to put up with sexual harassment, it is a very, very serious offence.”

Devine also took to social media to apologize for his comments:
