The city planning committee has approved a 24-hour drive thru in a Kitchener neighbourhood.
The A&W drive thru would be built on an empty lot near homes by Roberts Crescent in the Ottawa and Strasburg area.
Residents were concerned about late-night noise, lights and smells, however, the owner of the property says the drive thru lane will be far away from homes and divided by a large fence.
The area is zoned as a gas station with the option for a drive thru or a car wash, which Councillor Paul Singh says would be even more noisy.
Singh says ultimately, this is the best decision for the neighbourhood.
“There is a concern of traffic and noise but had we said ‘no’ the applicant would have challenged us. This is a decision that was not taken lightly but it seemed best for the neighbourhood.”
Kitchener City Council will sign off on the plan at the next meeting.
