Region releases proposed plan for Stage 2 ION into Cambridge

We’re learning more about Stage two of the ION today. That is the plan to expand light rail transit to Cambridge from Kitchener.

Over the next few months more public consultations will take place focusing on the route the ION should take.

So far, the Region has heard that residents want city heritage to be respected, have a stop at Preston and avoid Eagle/Pinebush/Hespeler intersection and the Delta, Water and Ainslie Streets. Also to have tracks at the median and not curb on Hespeler. Other feedback includes having the line serve employment lands and the airport, as well as integrate it with future GO stations.

Regional Councillor Tom Galloway says the total cost for Stage 2 will be just over $1-billion.

“The cost is $1.2 billion — it’s a fairly similar cost to Stage 1– but inflated by another 10 or so years. There are more bridges and structures to construct because of the Grand River and the Speed River, which we did not have to cross in Stage 1.”

The next public consultations will happen:

– February 28th, 4-8 p.m. at Kin Club of Cambridge
– March 1st, 2-8 p.m. at Newfoundland Club
