St. Jacobs’ Sittler named one of the 100 greatest NHL players

One of the most popular Maple Leafs players has been named to the NHL’s 100 greatest players list.

St. Jacobs native Darryl Sittler played 12 years for the Leafs and 15 years in the NHL.

Sittler was named captain of the Maple Leafs in 1975.

He is most famously known for his record breaking 10-point night against the Boston Bruins February 7th, 1976.

Two months later, Sittler would tie the playoff record for most goals in a game with five against the Philadelphia Flyers.

In September 1976, Sittler represented his country in the Canada Cup where he scored one of the most famous goals ever in Canadian hockey history against Czechoslovakia in overtime.

He finished his NHL career with stints in Philadelphia and Detroit amassing 1,121 points, 484 goals and 637 assists.

Sittler was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.

The Toronto Maple Leafs raised his #27 to the rafters of the Air Canada Centre and officially retired his number October 15th, 2016.

The list was unveiled Friday night in Los Angeles as part of the NHL’s all-star festivities and to celebrate it’s Centennial season.
