City of Guelph warns of minor traffic disruptions as they replace LED traffic signal bulbs

Crews will be hard at work in Guelph over the next year as the City plans to replace all of their LED traffic signal bulbs.

Steve Anderson, Supervisor of Traffic Engineering with the City of Guelph, says they’re launching the city-wide replacement project as the LED lights were initially installed almost a decade ago.

“This is a life cycle replacement of the LED lenses that were initially installed between 2005 and 2006. Prior to that, all of the traffic signals were basically just regular light bulbs, which needed to be replaced sometimes as much as twice annually.”

Anderson says the City has saved 90 per cent a year on energy costs for traffic signal operation since switching to the LED lights over ten years ago.

“The big advantages are the annual operating savings as our hydro costs have been reduced significantly, and the fact that these lights are relatively maintenance-free– whereas before, we were out at each intersection at lease once annually replacing all of the lenses.”

The City says the total LED replacement project cost is expected to be around $162,000.

“The total anticipated cost this year is just over $160,000, and right now the City has 188 signalized locations– the attempt will be to replace the LED bulbs at all of them, with the exception of some that have either just be constructed or are planned to be reconstructed later this year.”

Anderson says the replacement work is expected to begin sometime during the week of January 23rd.

“We’re hoping to start next week as we’re just waiting for the last material shipment to come in. We have a contractor doing the work, and they haven’t finalized the schedule, but we’re anticipating it will take most of the year to complete the replacements.”

Anderson adds that there will be minor traffic disruptions as crews work at each location, but the City is planning to reduce the disruptions by completing work at higher volume intersections during off-peak hours.
