Festival of Living Streets kicks off Christmas season in Waterloo

Uptown businesses have a lot to celebrate.

King Street is open just in time for the holiday shopping season, and the Region celebrated with the Festival of Living Streets.

Complete with a live Christmas band, dancing ballerinas, prizes, ice sculptures, giant snow men, displays from local shops and more, many came out for the festivities and one person went home with a $500 shopping spree given out by Mayor Dave Jaworsky.

The Waterloo Mayor was on hand drawing the prizes, and says store owners are thrilled at the reopening of King Street.

“Every retailer I’ve visited is so excited to see people here. There’s a lot of excitement about the Uptown retailers and shops being open,” says Jaworsky. “I think people really need to come Uptown to see the brand new sidewalks, how wide they are and how much room they give. It gives a whole new openness to Uptown and it’s very exciting for all of the things that are going on here today.”

Event organizer Wendy Vasco couldn’t wait to show off the displays from local stores and all of the activities they had to offer.

“Everyone is enjoying themselves, they’re happy that King Street is open, this is just one big party.”
