Friend of family of Susana Dumitru raising funds to return body to Romania

A friend of the family of Susana Dumitru has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to repatriate her body to Romania, where most of her family is located.

The campaign is also backed by Susana’s brother Vasile Istoc and cousin Ligia Grada, with her husband Razvan Dumitru receiving the funds raised.

They hope to raise the $35,000 they say is needed to bring her body back to Romania, with any extra funds going to the medical expenses of her 2-month-old son George who is still clinging to life in a Toronto hospital.

Rebeka Pop is the friend who began the campaign and she says she knew she had to do something more than grieve.

“As a wife and a mother of a 15-month-old daughter myself, I just felt in my insides that I have to help this family. So I was thinking of ways, how can I help them, and I realized, I can start a GoFundMe account,” says Pop.

She wants to thank everyone for their support so far in the campaign, which as of 2 p.m. on December 5, its sixth day, it was less than $1000 away from its goal.

If the expenses of bringing Susana’s body to Romania, and George’s medical bills are covered, any funds on top of that will go to a trust fund for George’s future.

Pop says everyone would have been lucky to know Susana.

“Susana was a loving and dedicated mother and wife, a creative and talented architect, and she was very kind and friendly,” says Pop. “She was so excited after having George, and she was so full of life and loved being around people and just trying to make them happy.”

Dumitru was killed when their vehicle was rear-ended on Highway 7/8 at Trussler Road in Wilmot on November 27th.

The driver of the other vehicle, 26-year-old Ahmed Darwish, is facing several charges including impaired driving.
