Niagara Amber Alert lifted, now treated as missing person case

Police are continuing their search for a nine-year-old girl believed to be abducted by her mother.

Niagara Regional Police say Layla Sabry and her mother Allana Haist were last seen Thursday at 6 p.m. in Welland.

Earlier reports indicated the Amber Alert ended early Saturday, but Niagara police say that is not the case.

The Amber Alert was lifted late Saturday afternoon, with Constable Virginia Moir stating police are still concerned for Layla’s safety and are actively looking for her, but enough time has lapsed that it is now being treated as a missing person investigation.

Staff Sgt. Paul Rogers says there’s a concern the mother might flee with her daughter. “We need to know her whereabouts. We have no jurisdiction because they’re from out of the country. However, there is a court order in place which means we need to bring the child back and let the courts sort it all out.”

Police say they are operating under a court order to return the child to her father.

Layla is described as white, four-foot two, light brown hair and brown eyes.

Her mother, who police say also goes by the aliases of Kate Dillon or Lana Marie, is white, five-foot one, medium length brown hair with brown eyes.
