Fountain in Cambridge now closed for two years

A major road closure started Thursday morning in Cambridge.

Road work has shut down Fountain for the next two years to replace the 60 year-old bridge over the Grand River.

The stretch between the roundabout at Blair Road through to Linden Drive has been completely closed.

Work to remove the bridge will be much different than work that was done to reconstruct the Fountain Street bridge over the 401.

Senior Project Manager John Stephenson says this will take time as each piece must be cut away carefully.

“There is a lot of analysis done ahead of time to ensure the order of cutting away the pieces of the bridge is such that the bridge is still capable of supporting what remains as it is being demolished. It is a careful process but one that has been thought out quite well.”

Grand River Transit, Emergency Services, along with garbage collection have been informed and have been able to alter routes and schedules for the long term road work.

Secondary work along Fountain Street from Linden to Shantz Hill wont started until April 1, 2018 and is expected to be completed by the fall of that year.

Stephenson says detours to get around the closure will include Fountain Street west of Blair Road, a short part of the 401 and Shantz Hill from the 401 to Fountain.
