Cambridge councillors restricted to closed door meetings

Cambridge City Council have passed a motion that will ban councillors from sitting in closed door meetings of committees they are not part of.

Ward 4 Councillor Jan Liggett felt like the decision was pointed at her.

She was at closed door multiplex meetings, but isn’t on the task force.

The vote was split down the middle with Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig holding the deciding vote, who voted in favour of the motion.

“We have two Councillors already assigned to a closed meeting and then you end up with four or five other Councillors going into that closed meeting, you end up with an illegal council meeting essentially.”

Craig clarifies why this motion was passed.

“I don’t want to be in a situation where we end up with Councillors unknowingly going into closed meetings of committees and constituting a council meeting under the Municipal Act which in fact, itself is not right.”

He says, it’s not just controversial issues, saying what is discussed at closed door Multiplex meetings is brought to every city Councillor, regardless of who sits on the task force.
