St. Mary’s receives award for organ and tissue donation

St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener has received an award for organ and tissue donation from the Trillium Gift of Life Network.

St. Mary’s was handed the award on Thursday afternoon from the TGLN for exceeding the provincial conversion rate in 2015-2016 for organ and tissue donation.

The hospital’s conversion rate was 75 per cent as they had four potential donors– and three went on to give the gift of life.

In a release, the hospital says “organ donation is a complex process and St. Mary’s conversion and notification rates reflect how well the hospital and Trillium Gift of Life Network work together to save lives.”

There are 1,500 people in Ontario waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

Currently, Kitchener exceeds the province with a registration rate of 37 per cent— ranking 103 out of 170 communities in Ontario.
