Toronto’s main stock index makes modest gain, loonie falls; U.S. indexes mixed

TORONTO – The Toronto Stock Exchange had a modest gain this morning.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 58.5 points at 14,866.06 after two hours of trading.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 10.48 points at 18,209.81. But the broader S&P 500 was down 2.12 points at 2,137.31 and the Nasdaq composite fell 11.15 points to 5,239.12.

The Canadian dollar was at 74.68 cents US, down 0.05 of a U.S. cent from Wednesday’s close.

The December crude contract gained 64 cents to US$49.82 per barrel and December natural gas was up four cents at US$3.08 per mmBTU.

The December gold contract was up $4.60 at US$1,269 an ounce and December copper contracts were up one cent at US$2.16 a pound.
