Car plunges into Lake Ontario in Toronto

Rescue efforts are underway after a car went into the lake in the area of Cherry Street and Polson Street on Thursday afternoon.
Police say they were called around 4 p.m. with reports a car travelling at a high rate of speed hit the guardrail on the lift bridge on Cherry Street just south of Polson Street and crashed into the water.

Two eyewitnesses on the scene jumped into the frigid water to try and assist the occupants of the car, according to police. One person has since been taken to hospital to be treated for exposure.
Police believe there was still one person in the car, which is currently submerged under approximately 25 feet of water.
The Police Marine Unit is on the scene along with Toronto Fire to assist in any rescue attempt. A fire official on the scene said they have yet to locate the vehicle under the water.
