Laurier men’s football finish regular season in second place

The Laurier Golden Hawks have clinched a first round playoff bye in the OUA playoffs.

They defeated the Windsor Lancers 38-9 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The victory gives the Hawks a 7-1 record, giving them their best finish since 2007.

After the game, Head Coach Michael Faulds took to Twitter to share a special message with his group.

In a release, Faulds says the success they’ve enjoyed this year, is all because of patience.

“The success we’ve enjoyed this season is extra special because of where we were,” said Faulds after the victory. “It’s a testament to all our players and staff. The message we brought to the program back in 2013 was to stay the course. The players knew it was going to be a process that would take time. Our guys truly bought into that and have trusted in the staff. We’re finally seeing the rewards of all our hard work that we put in.”

It was also a milestone day for Coach Faulds. He earned his first career victory over the Windsor Lancers.

Quarterback Michael Knevel continued his torrid pace completing 15-of-20 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown. He earned a career best 15 completions and threw for a career record in yards.

Knevel spread the ball out well but had a few favorite targets. Kurleigh Gittens Jr. and Brentyn Hall both had over 100 receiving yards. Gittens Jr. had a game-high 122 yards, while Hall had 113 yards.

Marcus Arkarakas scored the Hawks only touchdown through the air.

Faulds continued to do what the Golden Hawks do best and that’s run the ball. It was by committee Saturday afternoon.

Levondre Gordon earned his third straight 100+ yard rushing game. He had 18 carries for 109 yards with a touchdown. Osayi Iginuan rushed the ball 13 times for 92 yards while Eric Guiltinan had 11 attempts for 46 yards and two touchdowns.

Guiltinan and Gordon finished within the top ten in rushing yards in the conference. Guiltinan finished his season with 736 yards while Gordon compiled 637 yards on the ground.

Defensive standout and linebacker Godfrey Onyeka finished his season ranked first in the conference with 51 tackles and second in tackles for a loss with 15.

Laurier will now have two weeks to prepare for their first home playoff game since 2010 which takes place in Waterloo, November 5th.
