Laurier’s football team hosts Guelph in school day game Friday

It’s the school day game at Wilfrid Laurier University and that means the stadium will be packed with over four-thousand elementary students.

All the action gets underway Friday morning at 11 a.m. at University Stadium.

The number seven nationally ranked Golden Hawks are coming off a win against the Toronto Varsity Blues, while the defending Yates Cup champions are coming off a bye week.

Guelph has four losses on the season, but three of them, have come against teams in the CIS top ten.

Laurier Head Coach Michael Faulds tells us the rivalry between both schools has been growing for quite some time.

“I think because Guelph has been so good the last five years, it’s a team that our players definitely circle on the calendar,” says Faulds, “obviously any time you face a team that has won the Yates Cup the previous year, that’s going to draw a lot of excitement.”

Both teams have a lot on the line in this game, The Guelph Gryphons are fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive, while the Golden Hawks are fighting for playoff positioning.

Faulds adds the Gryphons are a much better team than what their record shows.

“They won the Yates Cup last year for a reason, they are also coming off a bye week so they are going to be rested and well prepared” says Faulds, “a lot of people outside the locker room say we may walk away with this game but internally we know that this is going to be a very tough and competitive football game.”

The Hawks will have starting running back Eric Guiltinan back in the lineup this week.

“We gave Guiltinan a rest against Toronto to rest up and he should be ready to go to take on Guelph.”
