‘The First Shift’ getting kids hooked on hockey

The First Shift is taking off and getting our kids hooked on our national pastime, all at a relatively low price.

Since 2013, 5,000 children across Canada have participated, with 86% of them continuing on with the sport.

For $200, kids get new gear and six on-ice sessions.

Bauer Hockey’s Vice-President of Marketing, Mary-Kay Messier says it’s also an opportunity to invite new Canadians into the game. “Those are some of the most rewarding experiences, because they’re so grateful for the opportunity to get involved.”

“Parents just want to try the sport before they know and sign up for a season…The First Shift really offers that opportunity to have a great experience and we’re really finding that families are having a great experience.”

Messier’s brother is NHL great Mark Messier, who is also involved with the program.

The First Shift offered 80 programs in 2015 and expanded to 150 this year.
