GrandLinq provides update on LRT construction

GrandLinq is providing an update on ION work in Waterloo Region.

Lauren McGirr with GrandLinq says despite a few hiccups, everything is going according to plan.

“We’ve made excellent progress through the summer and into the fall. In terms of progress, GrandLinq has completed over 75 per cent of the work to get ION up and running. That includes installing approximately 51 km of new underground pipe for storm systems, and sanitary systems– and also includes installing 24,000 m or almost 65 per cent of the 36,000 m LRT track.”

McGirr says construction is still on schedule, despite issues with the trains from Bombardier.

“Generally most areas will reopen to traffic in 2016, however there are some isolated areas that will require work to continue into 2017.”

McGirr says they WILL be reopening the Highway 85 off-ramps and southbound on-ramp from Northfield, Parkside at Northfield and Wilson between Fairway and Kingsway on Wednesday evening.

“We’ve made progress and work is ongoing. In the last week, we’ve reopened Kumpf at Northfield, Columbia at the railway tracks, Caroline from Erb to Allen, King from Union to William, Victoria from Weber to Joseph, King from Victoria to Francis and the full-length of Charles from Victoria to Benton has also reopened.”

McGirr adds that as Oktoberfest is here, Duke at Young in Kitchener has reopened to accommodate additional traffic for the Oktoberfest opening ceremonies and Frederick and King will also reopen early in the morning of October 10th to accommodate the Oktoberfest Parade.
