Western ends Laurier’s four game win streak

It was a battle of two power house football teams in the OUA Saturday afternoon.

The Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team traveled to London to take on the Western Mustangs.

Coming into this week’s matchup, the Golden Hawks and Mustangs both had success using their run games and hold the position as the top two rushing teams in the CIS.

Both teams’ running games were halted this week by strong defensive showings, but the Mustangs found a way to attack the Golden Hawks defence – through the air.

The Hawks managed to score an early second half touchdown by Brentyn Hall, which made it a one-score game.

The Mustangs turned it up a notch and scored 17 consecutive points which ended the Hawks four game win streak.

In a release, Head Coach Michael Faulds says a failed third down conversion is what changed the landscape of the game.

“We felt like we had the momentum [after Hall’s touchdown],” said head coach Michael Faulds after the game. “Then they went down and scored, and we failed on a third down conversion. I feel like if we convert on that third down then there’s a chance. But they’re a really high powered offence and we gave them a short field a couple of times so there’s a lot we need to clean up.”

Michael Knevel made his second straight start for the Golden Hawks at quarterback, he finished the game 11-for-30 for 243 yards and two touchdowns.

The Mustangs took this one at TD Stadium, 45-26. With the loss, the Hawks are now in a four-way tie for second place in the OUA, joining Ottawa, McMaster and Carleton. Western moves into sole position of first place with the victory.
