Miss Oktoberfest 2016 will be crowned tonight

Kitchener-Waterloo will have a new Miss Oktoberfest after tonight.

It’s the 13th year the festival has decide to pick a local woman from a crop of hopefuls. The current holder of the sash and tiara is Holly Pearson from Waterloo.

The job of being Miss O is nothing short of daunting. One of the many tasks the winning girl has to handle is over 200 appearances within the region. Now with all the events the winner has to attend, one of the requirements for any contestant is that they have to live within an 80 kilometre radius of KW.

Pearson tells 570 news there’s tons of ways you can impact people while holding the prestigious position. “The most important thing for me is to be able to connect with the people in the community. It puts you in a position to help the community.”

Now with all those appearances to choose from, what could possibly be Pearson’s favourite? “I had the opportunity to chat with 13 and 14 year-old women at an all-girls club. There was probably 30 or 40 of them and I got to talk to them about what you can learn from being Miss Oktoberfest. It was really wonderful because using this role to do positive work in the community was really rewarding for me.”

Pearson’s successor will be crowned tonight at The Miss Oktoberfest Gala Ball at Bingemans.
