Community in Waterloo not on board with traffic calming proposal

Hundreds of people living near the Lake Louise Boulevard area in Waterloo are not happy with a traffic calming plan proposed for their area.

Although people living on Lake Louise Boulevard feel the area does have a speeding problem, they don’t think the proposed plan of three traffic circles and two speed humps will work.

On Monday staff will recommend city council to keep the plan, originally proposed in April, as is.

Randy Taylor lives in the area, he says he doesn’t think traffic circles will help the speeding issue.

“First of all, the street was never built in the first place to accommodate those,” says Taylor. “We’re concerned they aren’t really effective because they didn’t really slow traffic down much, and we’re concerned around the safety of children crossing the street, particularly going to school in the morning.”

An online petition created by someone else living in that area has over 300 signatures calling on council to cancel traffic circle plan.

“I’m just hoping that the councilors of Waterloo will show some leadership and understand that, even though the engineers have worked hard at developing what they think is a good plan, they don’t live on the street,” says Taylor. “They’re not dealing with the day-to-day issues, it’s not their children who are going to be exposed to the roundabouts.”
