Affordable housing front and centre at big city mayors meeting

All three levels of government will be in attendance for Friday’s meetings in Toronto.

Eight mayors from across Canada will collaborate and share ideas on how to tackle the country’s on-going affordable housing crisis.

The summit will feature key note speakers Jean-Yves Duclos, Federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, and Chris Ballard, Ontario Minister of Housing and Poverty Reduction. Together with the Mayors, they’ll try and plan out a solution on how each city can make sure every Canadian has a home.

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic is representing the region in Toronto. He tells 570 News it’s a great way to make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to the crisis. “After a decade of under-investment in affordable housing, Canada is now seriously facing an affordable housing crisis. It serves as a way to have the federal and provincial governments work with us on this issue.”

Vrbanovic says that although the bigger picture is Canada as a whole, he’s also in Toronto to find ways to tackle the crisis right here in the region. “People are facing waits of up to three years and the only way we’ll be able to address it here is by developing a national housing strategy that benefits the communities here.”

The federal Liberals are expected to announcing phase two funding for their social infrastructure plan later this fall.
