Kitchener takes next step in facelift for Carl Zehr Square

A major facelift appears to be in the offing for Carl Zehr Square outside Kitchener City Hall.

City council has voted in favour of moving forward with the master plan process for outdoor spaces at City Hall.

Council was told the square, which was built close to 25 years ago, is in critical need of infrastructure repairs, upgrades or replacement.

A report says such areas as the surface concrete, drains and parking garage are close to the end of their life cycle.

It warns, if these issues are not addressed, they could pose health, safety and accessibility risks.

The master plan also takes a look at the long term recreational usage of the square, with council also considering improvements to the ice rink, fountain and public event stage.

All told, the cost of the work could be in the range of $7.1-million.

Council stresses any work would have to be done without using taxpayers’ money.

The next step is for staff to prepare a report on how to fund the project.

That report is expected to be complete next year.
