Extra security on hand for Laurier’s Homecoming

It’s a great weekend to be a Laurier Golden Hawk.

Wilfrid Laurier University is hosting their annual homecoming celebrations.

The weekend is highlighted by a football game against cross-town rivals, the Waterloo Warriors. That takes place at 1pm on Saturday.

The focus for the university though is making sure the weekend is safe and orderly.

In addition to Waterloo Regional Police and Special Constables at the university, Laurier has hired 40 additional security personnel.

Laurier’s Director of Communications Kevin Crowley says it’s all about having a visible presence – “They are not just there for enforcement they are there to educate as well, so we do have an extensive plan to communicate with students and alumni and to be on the ground across the campus.”

Crowley said they expect about 10,000 alumni and students to take part in the weekend celebration.

At last year’s Homecoming, police reported no major incidents, but they did have to break up several parties that grew to 200 to 300 people.
