Monthly women’s, LGBTQ2+ comedy show gets underway in Kitchener

Laugh Out Loud is a stand up comedy night getting underway at B @ THEMUSEUM tonight at 8:30.
It features Aisha Brown, a signed Yuk Yuks comedian who has performed at the esteemed Just for Laughs festival, and Hayley Kellet and Elijah Zimmerman from Guelph, and Preeti Torul from Toronto.
Suzie Taka is still fairly new to the stand-up comedy scene, and is co-producing tonight’s show with her friend Erinn White.
“What we decided to do is to take a lot of the things we care about and love which are humour, stand-up comedy and empowering voices that we don’t get to hear that often and wrap them up into one little package for a fun night in downtown Kitchener,” says Taka.
She adds that the show will be on once a month and is geared to empower women and those of the LGBTQ community, but that everyone is welcome.
“You don’t often get to hear very specific voices or diversity of voices at comedy shows, like many other areas they tend to be very male dominated,” Taka says. “And it’s hard because the jokes aren’t about you, they aren’t for you and sometimes they’re making fun of you, so this is a place where no one has to worry about that aspect.”
Taka says her routine has jokes ranging from feminism to the adventures of her house cats, and the other comics also offer a little bit of everything.
Discussing the LGBTQ community is near and dear to Taka’s heart as she participates in the Rainbow Reels Festival in Kitchener, and she says it’s important to build more of these safe spaces for everyone, such as the OutFest theatre festival that occurred at the Registry Theatre earlier this month.
“The more avenues we have for people to find each other and build that community, the better that helps the hard part, which are the unfortunate statistics about things like hate crimes in Waterloo Region or being named the worst place to be a woman in Canada.”
