OPP say distracted driving caused more deaths than impairment

Ontario Provincial Police are urging us to pay attention on roadways as new statistics show distracted driving has been responsible for nearly twice as many deaths as impaired driving.

OPP say they have investigated 38 on-road deaths involving distracted driving so far this year– almost twice as many as those caused by impaired drivers, which is a gap that has never been seen before.

In a release, OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair says they are calling on all of us to try and curb the amount of distracted driving deaths.

“Don’t be a passenger of a distracted driver. Recognize that they are endangering your life. Speak up and insist that they focus on the road and on safe driving.”

Since 2009, inattentive driving has been blamed for more than 600 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads.
