Council bans feeding wildlife in Kitchener

Kitchener city council has voted in favour of a new bylaw amendment that addresses the feeding of wild animals on private property.

Breaking the law could net you a fine of up to $5,000.

The updated rule kicks in immediately and is aimed at stemming the tide of animals such as skunks, coyotes and raccoons, making their way into residential neighbourhoods.

The City says the update is intended to provide staff with the ability, as a last resort, to address situations that are unreasonably attracting wild animals or rodents or causing damage to property.

Bird feeders are exempt from the bylaw, along with the feeding of feral cats.
